What is the difference between a Hochschulsemester and a Fachsemester?

If you have changed majors, the number of semesters at the university (Hochschulsemester) will no longer be identical to the number of semesters in your major (Fachsemester). Under Hochschulsemester, enter the total number of semesters you have been enrolled. Under Fachsemester, enter the number of semesters you have been enrolled in your new / current major.

In order to give as many students as possible a chance to rent inexpensively, rental periods in Studierendenwerk dorms are limited to six to eight semesters. An extension can only be considered in exceptional cases.

What kind of notice do I have to give to terminate my lease?

What kind of notice do I have to give to terminate my lease?

Before the end of the contractual period the lease can be terminated only in exceptional cases, when more particular circumstances are explained. Notice must be given not later than the third business day of a calendar month to the end of the month after next. The deadline of the input is crucial.

Can I move to another dorm?

You cannot switch directly between dorms. First, you would have to terminate the lease on your current room, then there is a waiting period of one month during which you cannot be a tenant of the Studierendenwerk, and then you can apply for a different room. Please note that your reapplication will be non-binding, and you will not have a claim to a room.

The rent charged is all-inclusive which means that all bills for utilities (electrical, gas, water, trash, Internet, etc.) are included. There will be no utility statement at the end of the year. Due to public subsidies, the rents are usually below market level.

All dorms have high-speed Internet. The cost is included in the rent.

May students from another university / university of applied sciences also live at our dorms?

May students from another university / university of applied sciences also live at our dorms?

Students from other universities are not eligible to live in the dorms unless they are here for an internship which is part of their studies.

We will need the following:

  • The exact start and end dates for which you need the room
  • A copy of your admissions letter, as well as a copy of your internship certificate  
  • Your address

You will not receive a receipt confirmation. If we are able to offer you a room, we will send you an offer about 4 weeks before the date you requested.

The rents for vacation rentals range from 210 to 280 euros. The deposit is 1,5 months rent.

Subletting is not allowed. Please note that this would be grounds for termination.

How can I apply for preferential dorm readmission after my study abroad stay?

How can I apply for preferential dorm readmission after my study abroad stay?

In the case of a study-related rental interruption, Studentenwerk Bonn will give tenants the option of preferential dorm readmission after their study abroad stay or internship of at least 6 and no more than 12 months' duration.

Tenants who want to take advantage of this option must terminate their room rental and apply for dorm readmission. Please apply online and add in the comment field that you are seeking preferential readmission. With your application, you must also submit proof of internship or study abroad for study-related reasons. 

Applicants may list alternate room requests, but the dorm they used to live in will be offered if possible preferentially and as long as space is available. Applicants who refuse a rental offered will lose their claim to preferential dorm readmission.

When will I get my deposit back?

The deposit, or what is left of it, will be transferred to an account indicated by the tenant after the latter has moved out and returned the rental. Any costs arising, such as damage to the rental, bank fees, etc. will be subtracted from the deposit. The deposit will be returned / wired six weeks after the end of the rental period. Interest will not be paid on the deposit (according to § 551 (3) BGB).

Move-in times are from Monday through Friday. You should agree on a date and time with your building management.

After you have signed a contract, you should agree on a date and time for key pick-up with your building management.

Tenants must pay a deposit before the contract is signed. It always amounts to 1.5 times to double the rent. Interest will not be paid on the deposit (according to § 551 (3) BGB).

In order to give as many students as possible a chance rent inexpensively, rental periods in Studierendenwerk dorms are limited to six semesters. If applicants have already lived in a dorm before, that period will be counted against their new rental period. Generally, the rental period cannot be extended. Under exceptional circumstances, which must be justified in writing, the rental period may be extended.

The administrative office of the Student Housing Department (Abteilung Studentisches Wohnen) is available to assist you on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00 to 12:00 h, and also on Thursdays from 14:00 to 16:00 h.

Even if you have applied in due time, you will neither receive a confirmation of receipt nor an interim notification. We appreciate your understanding that we cannot provide these, given the number of applicants.

When you sign your contract, you will also have to complete a direct debit authorization. This is specified in the contact. Exceptions apply to vacation and guest tenants.

All the dorms have washers and dryers. The machines can be used with your Mensa-Card. A Mensa-Card will be issued upon presentation of your student ID and for a deposit of 5.10 € at any cafeteria or at the info.point at Nassestrasse 11, 53113 Bonn.
